Camping Crackdown: MidCoast Council Targets Illegal Camping on Beaches

As the summer sun beckons beach lovers to the MidCoast, a stern warning has been issued by the MidCoast Council regarding illegal camping activities. The council is taking a firm stand against unauthorized camping, which encompasses setting up camp in prohibited areas such as beaches.

Paul De Szell, the Director of Liveable Communities, emphasized the detrimental effects of illegal camping on the local community, businesses, and the environment. Responding to the concerns raised by residents in popular coastal spots, the council has ramped up patrols and enforcement measures. Council rangers now have the authority to levy fines and evict individuals camping illegally, whether it be in cars, tents, or vans.

In addition to cracking down on illegal camping, council rangers are empowered to penalize offenders for illegal parking, littering, and driving on beaches without proper permits. Fines for such violations, determined by Revenue NSW, range from $110 to $600.

Collaborating with the National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers and NSW Police, the council is intensifying its presence in key coastal towns like Seal Rocks, Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, Crowdy Head, and Harrington. The message is clear: finding suitable accommodation is pivotal, and travelers are urged to secure lodging in designated camping areas or private facilities.

During peak seasons, visitors are advised to plan and book accommodations well in advance. Alternative options away from the coastline, such as Taree, Wingham, and Gloucester, offer viable choices for those seeking a camping experience without breaching regulations.

MidCoast Council remains committed to working with local communities to explore further strategies to curb illegal camping and combat littering issues. By promoting responsible camping practices, the council aims to preserve the natural beauty of the region and uphold the interests of both residents and visitors alike.
