Venturing into the wild has never been more popular, as camping and caravanning enthusiasts flock to the Sunshine Coast in record numbers. The region’s picturesque landscapes and coastal allure have enticed over 650,000 holidaymakers to caravan parks and campgrounds in the 12 months leading up to September 2024, marking a substantial 10% increase from the previous period.
Matt Stoeckel from Visit Sunshine Coast attributes this surge to a newfound appreciation for the natural environment that the Sunshine Coast offers. With coastal holiday parks like Coolum, Cotton Tree, and Noosa mere steps away from sandy shores, and inland sites nestled within lush rainforests and rural vistas, campers are spoiled for choice in this outdoor paradise. The mild year-round climate further enhances the appeal, making camping a delightful experience throughout the seasons.
Sunshine Coast Council’s holiday parks alone welcomed over 125,000 visitors last year, injecting $12 million into the local economy. The affordability of camping coupled with the proximity to beaches and verdant surroundings has made these parks a hot commodity, often operating at full capacity during peak periods. The recent upgrades to facilities at Coolum Beach and Mudjimba holiday parks reflect the commitment to providing top-notch amenities for visitors.
While many parks offer luxurious features such as water parks and pet-friendly accommodations, free camping areas like Little Yabba Creek Park and Belli Creek Park provide budget-friendly alternatives for nature lovers. These spots not only offer basic amenities but also grant access to nearby attractions like the Eumundi Markets and Noosa National Park, enriching the overall camping experience.
Despite a slight dip in overnight stays at national park and state forest campgrounds in 2024, the outlook remains positive for camping enthusiasts. The region’s 23 campgrounds continue to draw in crowds, with the Bribie Island Recreation Area standing out as a favored destination for its pristine beaches, scenic trails, and family-friendly activities.
As the allure of camping on the Sunshine Coast shows no signs of waning, outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to more memorable experiences in the great outdoors throughout 2025 and beyond.
