Ambulance Victoria is urging Victorians to prioritize safety when venturing outdoors during school holidays. Whether engaging in camping, mountain biking, or hiking, the emphasis is on understanding personal limitations and ensuring safety measures are in place. Recent incidents of falls and high angle rescues attended by Wilderness Response paramedics highlight the importance of preparedness.
Jonathan Hopkins, AV Alpine Senior Team Manager, stresses the need for adequate preparation before embarking on outdoor activities. Essential items include communication devices, appropriate clothing and footwear, sufficient supplies of water, food, matches, sunscreen, and a torch. Carrying a first aid kit, knowledge of snake bite management, and CPR skills are also recommended as emergencies can occur unexpectedly.
Weather conditions should be monitored, especially in remote areas, where conditions can change rapidly. Hopkins advises familiarizing oneself with resources like the EmergencyPlus app, equipped with GPS for precise location sharing with emergency services. The app also features What3Words software for offline use in areas with poor data connectivity.
For additional safety, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is suggested to signal emergency services via satellite when activated. Staying informed about incidents and warnings in the vicinity can be done through the VicEmergency app, which provides notifications about road and trail closures that may impact plans.
Guidelines for safe hiking include informing someone of the itinerary, carrying ample supplies, being wary of hypothermia and heatstroke risks, and using the EmergencyPlus app for location details. The What3Words feature’s offline functionality ensures usability in remote areas with limited data access. The VicEmergency app serves as a valuable tool for staying abreast of local incidents and closures.
As outdoor activities gain popularity, ensuring safety measures are in place becomes paramount. Hopkins emphasizes the importance of being adequately equipped and informed to handle emergencies effectively. By following these guidelines and utilizing available resources, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy their adventures responsibly and with peace of mind.
